Catching up

Wow, this blog is pathetic, isn't it? It's okay, just say yes, I know it's true. :)

Okay, so school has started back, and I'm no longer working at the restaurant. I did get my wish of being homeschooled this year, and it's interesting. Every coin has two faces, after all. On the not-so-bright one, being in closer proximity means Mom and I have more clashes; my self-discipline is getting rigorous exercise every day; and I'm not getting as much physical exercise as I used to, something I'm going to have to remedy. On the bright shiny face, I'm actually studying things I'm interested in for the most part, and actually learning things. Wow! Yea! Oh, and I have a life now, and I'm not tired all the time. That's a big plus.

British Literature is my favorite class. I actually do have a class for that, an hour once a week, after which we're assigned reading and/or writing to do at home. It's great! I love exploring these classics, things I might not have picked up to read on my own, and finding literary gems. This week is Gulliver's Travels. I've read through the first book already, the adventures concerning Lilliput. Swift has an interesting writing style; the story could be a children's tale, yet he has made every effort, it seems, aside from the fantastic places visited by the hero, to make it appear a real account of a man's journeys. I love that.

As far as reading outside of school, I'm nearly through the Twilight saga by Stephenie Meyer for the second time. Man, I love those books! People kept telling me about them, and they always said something like, "They're about this girl who falls in love with a vampire. They're really good!" Honestly, that didn't sound so great to me. What could possibly be so good about a girl falling in love with a blood-sucking monster? I thought of the vampires in cartoons and bad horror movies and in the one other vampire romance series I tried and failed to like (the Circle Trilogy, by Nora Roberts--I didn't even get through the first book, Moregan's Cross). But Twilight is different. Meyer's vampires are totally unique. According to human reason, they should be unbelievable. I mean, super strong, almost indestructable, rock-hard skin, no heart and no liquid of any kind in their veins, not even a need for air...but she hit the nail on the head all the way home and never missed it once. I was hooked, and still am. The love story of Bella Swan and Edward Cullen is a thing of beauty.

Aside from Twilight, I've been reading books about faeries and all their relatives--anything I can get my hands on that isn't really juvenile--because starting October 1, I'll be writing about faeries of my own. More on that later, though.

In other news, I've started applying for colleges. Yea. I really, really hope I get into UNCG, my first choice, because the school looks really awesome, and I already know people there, and I've heard they have a great English department. It looks great, too, from what they have on their website. Oh, and plus, it's just the right distance from home to make it a good idea to live on campus, yet I'd still be close if there was a family emergency or something.

I'm going to really try to update this blog more frequently and not let it get covered in virtual dust bunnies. But right now, I'm going to cut this short and go get some food or coffee or something before getting back to school; I need something to wake me up. No, I'm not tired all the time, but yeah, I'm tired right now.

Yay, she's back!!! *confetti*

Oh, how I wish I could just go back to homeschool sometimes. Must be nice to actually have a life. :) Seriously, I'm glad to hear you're back at home again; I was getting worried, what with your being tired. Now you can't run yourself down, bwahaha!

British Lit?! (sigh) Lucky! What I wouldn't give to be taking an English class right now. I haven't read Swift, but I have been meaning to for a long time. Let me go see if I have the book, now that I'm thinking about it...and I do, indeed! Let me just add that to the long list of books that I'm reading whenever I have the time! :)

I've heard a lot of to-do about Twilight, and it actually does sound interesting. The fact that you like it makes me even more intrigued. :) How would you rate it, on a G to R scale?

Oh, wow, my first choice for transferring is also UNCG! I've heard good things about their English department, too. Yay, we could be going to the same school by next fall! *happy dance* Did you know that the English department has a program to send students to Kingston, England for a semester at the University of Hull?! I am SO on board for that!

Keep the updates coming! It's great to hear what you've been up to. BTW, I noticed you commented on my blog. I'll go reply to that right now. See you round!
